Pools Youth Team suffered their first defeat of the new Youth Alliance League season on Saturday as Grimsby Town took the points at Cheapside Training Ground.
Ian McGuckin’s side went in to their opening away fixture of the campaign in good spirits and sitting top of the league after two wins and a draw from their first three outings.
However, after a balanced start to the game, it was hosts Grimsby who went in front on the quarter-hour mark when Kyle Richardson found the space to fire the first goal.
Pools held their own for the majority of a well-balanced first half during which both sides engineered some good chances but McGuckin’s youngsters went in a goal down at the break.
It was The Mariners who got on the front foot early in the second period though and they doubled their lead just before the hour when Lennon Stead tucked a neat finish in to the bottom corner from just inside a crowded area.
From then on Pools applied a severe amount of pressure in a bid to get back in to the game but found Town keeper Ollie Battersby in inspired form and equal to everything they threw at him.
The Youth Team will be back in action this coming weekend when they play the second group game of the Youth Alliance League Cup campaign at Tranmere Rovers.
