Hartlepool United Women’s Team stormed up to second place in the NERWFL Premier Division table after running out 5-1 winners at York City on Sunday.

Craig Devon’s side have really hit form in recent weeks and hosts York had little in the way of answers as they steamrollered their way to a third straight league victory.

Pools began on the front foot with a midfield three controlling the game from the off against a York outfit who seemed content to sit deep and try to frustrate their visitors.

The dominance was rewarded on 15 minutes when the excellent Lottie Portas took up the ball on the edge of the box before turning on to her left foot and sending an unstoppable shot in to the top corner of the net.

Pools continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession with any threat of a City counter-attack comfortably dealt with by a confident back line.

Seven minutes before the break it was 2-0 as Portas doubled her tally for the afternoon with a delicate chip from just outside the box which was measured to perfection and beat the keeper.

It was a second goal which seemed to knock the stuffing out of York and Jade Pye made it 3-0 on 42 minutes before Jenny Duffy-Smith struck a fourth from a set-piece right on half-time.

The second period began as the first had ended and Pools increased their lead further on 50 minutes when Justine Robinson found the time and space to convert from just outside the area.

City did manage to grab a consolation goal when they took advantage of a rare moment of confusion in the Pools defence but it was a minor blemish on another powerful performance.

“We showed two sides to our game during the win,” Devon told us afterwards.

“In the first half we were able to get forward and score goals from all across the team, whilst in the second half we demonstrated our ability to control a game once we’re in a winning position.

“We have a big game coming up next week against Durham Cestria now but this recent run means that we will go in to that with a lot of confidence.”
