Marcus Dinanga and Josh Hawkes scored the goals as Pools clinched their place in Round Two of the Durham County Challenge Cup with victory over Sunderland Westend on Wednesday night.
John Hewitson and Ian McGuckin led the squad, which was a mixture of First Team players and Youth Team players, in the game at Nissan Sports Complex.
Pools fell behind during the first half when young full-back Harrison Webster was adjudged to have handled in the area and Sunderland’s John Butler tucked away the resultant penalty.
However, Pools responded well in the second period and were level just before the hour-mark when Hawkes picked out Dinanga in the middle and his header found the back of the net.
Hawkes then got on the scoresheet himself when he drove forward from the left and slotted a lovely finish past the keeper to make it 2-1.
“It was exactly the kind of test and experience we wanted for our young players – it’s the reason we’re in the competition,” said Hewitson.
“It helped us that we had some of the professionals in the team too but overall it was a good game and after a slow start we really got to grips with things in the second half.”
