Josh Hawkes and Marcus Dinanga scored the goals as a Pools XI ran out 2-1 winners over Shildon in a friendly at Dean Street on Tuesday night.
Ged McNamee oversaw the side – which was a mixture of First Team and Youth Team players – and they had to come from behind to enjoy victory over the Northern League Division One outfit.
Dinanga and Josh Scott both had half chances in the opening stages of the game as Pools attempted to get on the front foot.
However, it was the hosts who found the net on 16 minutes when former Pools man Matty Robson’s lofted free-kick from the halfway line wasn’t dealt with and the ball fell loose to a Daniel Moore who hooked it home.
There was a decent opportunity for young left-back Harrison Webster who wriggled his way right through in to the area but then drove a low shot just wide of the far post.
Shildon came close doubling their tally right on half-time when Brad Hird jinked inside from the right but his shot cannoned back off the post and the rebound went in to the side-netting.
Pools drew level on 57 minutes when Dinanga did well down the left wing and his low ball in to the middle found Conor Newton who knocked it in to the path of Josh Hawkes to smash home.
Lewis Hawkins could have put Pools in front for the first time on 70 minutes when the ball fell to him twenty yards out but his instinctive lobbed effort went just too high.
Substitute Conner Rennison then did well in midfield to slip a nice ball through for Dinanga on the edge of the area but the striker snatched at his shot and it flew wide.
The winning goal finally arrived on 78 minutes when Brad Fox showed positivity in possession to drive at the home defence before slipping the ball through for Dinanga who steered it home via the inside of the post.
