Pools Women’s Team suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of a powerful Durham Cestria outfit at Grayfields on Sunday afternoon.
The visitors – favourites for the NERWFL Premier Division title – were out of the blocks quickly and went at Pools from the first whistle, scoring twice inside the opening ten minutes to take control.
Pools altered their shape a little to try and cope with the onslaught and that helped them get a brief foothold in the game but Durham’s power and pace in attack was a constant danger.
Things got worse when Durham helped themselves to two more goals before skipper Justine Robinson pulled one back for Pools on the half-hour mark.
However, things continued in the same pattern after the break and a fifth goal knocked the stuffing out of Pools before they went on to rub salt in the wounds with two more goals to complete the rout.
“We made too many mistakes and too often took the wrong decision and it cost us,” admitted boss Craig Devon afterwards.
“That isn’t to take away from an excellent performance from Durham but hopefully we can all look back on the game, recognise our errors and learn from them as we move on.”
