Caitlin Bates fired a first half hat-trick as Pools Women’s Team got their NERWFL Premier Division campaign off to a flying start at Castleford White Rose on Sunday.

Last season’s top scorer helped herself to a treble in the first 26 minutes of the encounter as Craig Devon’s side produced a powerful display to race in to a stunning 6-0 lead by half-time.

Pools were in irresistible form from the first whistle and got their noses in front on four minutes when Bates got the ball on the edge of the box, drew the keeper and then slotted it in to the bottom corner.

Influential skipper Justine Robinson then got in on the act to make it 2-0 on 10 minutes when she charged past the home side’s defence and fired a clinical finish beyond the keeper.

It was 3-0 a minute later when more excellent work from Robinson down the left provided a tap-in for Bates from close range.

Bates then played a slick one-two with Sarah Bartlett before crossing in to the box for Robinson to convert and add a fourth goal for Pools on 24 minutes

The home side had no answer to the onslaught and Bates completed her hat-trick two minutes later after brilliant combination play with Robinson on the edge of the area and a powerful left-foot finish.

Just after the half-hour mark it was 6-0 when Bartlett played a ball in to Alisha Smith twenty yards from goal and she found the space to fire an unstoppable shot in to the top corner of the net.

The seventh goal arrived ten minutes in to the second half when Robinson – flourishing in a more attacking role this term – played an incisive ball through for substitute Faye Garside who cut in on her right foot to finish well.

“It was really pleasing to be able to make a few changes and rotate the team after a few tough cup games,” explained Devon afterwards.

“The players were all encouraging each other and offering advice throughout the game, which is great to see and shows the growing unity we have in the group now.”
