Ian McGuckin paid tribute to one of the Youth Team’s best performances of the season on Saturday as they defeated Rotherham United to move joint top of the Youth Alliance League.
Depleted by injury and illness, Pools were forced to shuffle their pack for the visit of The Millers but they ran out 2-0 winners to move level on points with Doncaster Rovers and Mansfield Town at the summit of the North East Division.
Brad Fox opened the scoring with a brilliant curling effort in to the top corner on 35 minutes before Josh Scott made the points safe with a close-range finish twenty minutes from time.
“I am really pleased when I look back on it – as pleased as I have been after any game this season,” admitted McGuckin.
“When you look at the personnel we had available to us and the players we had missing, it’s testament to the lads who have come in to be able to go and get a great result like that.
“Michael Roxburgh stepped up from the Under-16s to do really well in goal but we had to make other changes as well and the lads responded with a strong and committed performance.
“As well as the desire and determination, they showed plenty of quality too so I was delighted that they got the result that deserved because it was always going to be a tough and physical game.”
Pools will now look to complete a quick-fire double over their South Yorkshire counterparts when they host them once again in the Youth Alliance League Cup on Wednesday afternoon (1pm kick-off).
