Matthew Bates praised his side’s character after they earned an FA Cup replay with a strong performance and a goalless draw at League One Gillingham.
The Pools boss admitted in the run-up to the game that standards had to be raised following last week’s defeat at Bromley and he felt like the players delivered against The Gills.
Indeed, Pools not only held their own in the game, they had all the best chances and with a bit more luck in front of goal they could have clinched a place in Round Two.
“The lads were magnificent,” Bates told Pools PlayerHD.
“To come away to a League One side who have won two out of their last three and to limit them to very little and create the best chances is good so overall we’re very, very pleased with them.
“The pleasing thing was the discipline of the team and the way we kept plugging away to catch them on the break and we did it a few times and another day we come away with a win.
“If we play like we did today back in front of our own fans then there’s no reason we can’t go through but Gillingham are a good League One side and we need to be wary.
“There have been questions asked of us over the last week and I think they got answered today but now we need to follow that up back in the league against Barnet.”
