We get to know midfield man Conor Newton a little better by asking him our Firsts and Lasts questions.
What was the name of your first pet?
Well I hadn’t had one but then I got two at the same time – Lola and Lexi. They’re French Bulldogs and I want to say I didn’t have any say over the names!
What was your first car?
It was a white Vauxhall Astra and it was class!! I honestly thought I was the bees’ knees driving that. It was a 1.4 SXi – it looked pretty sporty but it felt like you were pedalling it!
What was your first holiday abroad?
When I was about 8 or 9 I went to visit one of my dad’s mates who had emigrated to Philadelphia. We stayed with him and toured along the East Coast with my parents, it was a great holiday.
What was the first gig you went to see?
I went to the O2 in London to see Watch The Throne, which was Jay-Z and Kanye West. It was a good weekend away not just with the gig but having a look around the Big Smoke!
What was the first match you went to see?
Haha, it was actually Newcastle United v Sheffield Wednesday won 8-0! I’m pretty sure Alan Shearer scored five that day, I remember buzzing afterwards. What a squad Newcastle had back then in 1999.
What was the first football shirt you owned?
It would have been a Newcastle one. It would probably have been one of those with the Newcastle Brown Ale logo on the front but I can’t remember exactly which one.
Who was your first best friend?
I would say it was a lad called Scott Highton – my mam and dad used to call him ‘Dodgy Highton’ because he was a bit of a wheeler-dealer! We went to school together and were from the same area.
When was the first time you realised you might turn pro?
It was probably when I was in the Youth Team at Newcastle. We had a really good team back then and we reached the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup twice. When you’re involved in a good team like that I think we all thought we had the chance to make progress.
What was your first match as a pro footballer?
Well, my first full ninety minutes in senior football was actually for St Mirren in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup against Celtic! I was quite nervous, especially when the Celtic team that day had the likes of Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama in it!
Who was your first football manager?
I signed for a team called Grainger Park when I was an Under 9. I only really went along because the manager, Jim Ross, was my mate’s dad! I went there halfway through the season but by the end of it I had signed for Newcastle.
What is the last thing you watched on TV?
Me and the missus have been watching The Sinner on Netflix. It’s very good. I would say it’s a captivating watch – we got through about nine episodes in two nights, I think!
What did you do for your last birthday?
It was a quiet one, to be honest. We got the little one looked after and then me and the missus just went for a bite to eat in town. Things get a lot quieter when you have a baby in the family.
What is the last thing you ate?
I had a couple of poached eggs on toast for breakfast. If I have time in the morning that’s what I like to have but with two dogs and baby in the house it’s sometimes easier to just get something a bit quicker!
Who is the last person you spoke to on the phone?
It was the missus actually. We’ve just bought a new house so she was on the phone to tell me about all the things she’s going to be buying for the place. I don’t think I have much say in it!
What was the last football match you went to (where you weren’t playing)?
I absolutely can’t remember the last time! I do remember going to a Newcastle game at Reading when I was living in Cambridge because it was pretty nearby but I can’t remember what the result was.
What is the last item of clothing you put on before a match?
I’m probably one of the quickest to get ready in the changing room. I am not one for having to rush about so I just like to get ready so I’m not sure there’s a particular order when it comes to the kit.
Who was the last person to text you?
It was my old lady. She’s coming up in the morning so she was texting to see how I was – and seeing if we were out of bed! Haha!
