Matthew Bates has backed new signing Andrew Davies to become a fans favourite at Victoria Park after he was unveiled as signing number three of the summer on Monday afternoon.
The experienced defender negotiated an exit from former club Ross County in order to finalise his switch to Pools and Bates couldn’t be happier to have landed one of his top transfer targets.
“We’re very pleased,” Bates told us.
“It’s something I have had in the back of my mind since getting the job really; I’ve played with Andrew at Boro and Bradford so know what quality he has and I know that’s he a leader for the dressing room too.
“For this level it’s a great signing for us. He could definitely play higher but I think one of the main reasons he’s here is because he’s a family man who has lived away for a long time and he wants to come home.
“I think it speaks volumes about how much he wants to be here that he’s cancelled his contract with his previous club where he was earning a lot more than he will be here.
“He wants to come back to the region and enjoy his football but from our point of view I don’t think you’ll find a better centre-half in the division.
“He is an enthusiastic lad with an infectious personality. I don’t think he’ll mind me saying he’s loud around the dressing room but he’s gets people going.
“He’s a joker off the pitch and the lads will love him but he will manage the dressing room and be a big influence on the rest of the players.
“He brought all his family with him when he signed and they’re just as excited as him; his mum used to work at the Club years ago and they’re talking about bringing all their family with them too so it’s as big for them as it is for us.
“He’s a whole-hearted player, he’ll give 100% in the every game – he’s our National League Ramos in that he’ll put his body on the line for the cause and I know the Hartlepool fans are going to love him.”
