Pools Still The Heartbeat Of The Town - Stelling

Jeff Stelling has admitted that the Club has been overwhelmed by the continued backing of supporters after Season Ticket sales raced past 500 in just two weeks.

It was almost six weeks before that milestone was reached last summer but sales have taken off quickly this time around after the Club opted to freeze prices and introduce a free Under 12 Season Ticket.

Club President Stelling says it’s given a massive boost to the owners to see the fans once again coming out in their numbers to support the Club and hopes it can continue throughout the summer.

“I’m really encouraged that the fans have come out and supported us in this sort of way,” he told us.

“Especially after the season we had last year, it’s brilliant that people are still willing to part with their hard-earned cash to back the Club.

“Obviously we’ve done our bit by freezing prices and offering free kids tickets but what the response tells you is that people have realised just how close we were to losing the Football Club and just how important it is to them.

“It’s still the heartbeat of the town and when that heart almost stopped beating at the end of last season I think it’s made everyone more determined, fans included, that it’s never going to happen again.

“From an owners and Club point of view, all I can do is thank them and hope that many more do the same thing – and when the season gets underway we can show them that their faith has not been misplaced.”

Stelling reckons the offer of free football for Under 12s is an excellent move for the Club and he hopes that it helps attract more youngsters to The Vic during 2018/19.

“Obviously I have three kids myself so I know that from a family point of view if you want to take you kids to the football it can be expensive.

“It’s not just getting them there; they might want a Programme, something to eat or all sorts of things so if you can take them along for free and they get in to the habit of enjoying it then it’s great.

“I remember when I was 7 I used to sneak in at 4.30pm when they opened the gates and catch the last ten minutes of games – that was what got me hooked, and probably lots of others too.

“Some of the kids who come along may have hardly seen any live football so hopefully they will get the bug as well and become Pools fans for as long as me!”
