Pools Reserves secured their first league win of the campaign with a 2-0 victory over Rotherham United at Victoria Park on Tuesday afternoon.
After a cagey opening, the first sight of goal came almost twenty minutes in when Rotherham mounted a dangerous attack down the left but the cross was headed wide by Joshua Kayode.
Pools’ first opening came after a good interception from Josh Hawkes on the halfway line set-up a counter-attack; Tomi Adeloye led the charge and cut inside with the ball but then dragged a shot wide of the target.
Keeper Ryan Catterick had to be alert to prevent the Rotherham trialist from opening the scoring after he jinked in to space on the edge of the box as the visitors pressed for a goal.
Pools responded immediately and came close to finding the net when Liam Travers let fly from twenty-five yards but his powerful drive flew just the wrong side of the post.
It was a bright start to the second half and Pools almost stole in front inside the first minute when a neat move freed Jack Blackford on the left of the area but Rotherham keeper Lewis Price did well to turn the shot around the post.
Pools’ early dominance after the break bore fruit when Blackford did well to beat his man on the left before drilling a cross in to the box where Jon Weirs superbly guided it in to the corner of the net for 1-0.
Catterick was at full stretch at the other end to keep Pools’ lead intact when he again denied the Millers’ trialist by tipping over his drive from the edge of the box.
Pools controlled most of the second period and increased their lead when another delivery in from the left found the head of the impressive Travers and it soared in to the top corner.
The young front man could even have added a third goal right at the end when he got between two defenders and got off a shot but it was well held by Price.
