Pools Youth Team are in Youth Alliance League Cup semi-final action on Saturday when they host Grimsby Town at Welfare Park in Blackhall Colliery (12noon kick-off).
Ian McGuckin’s men have enjoyed a wonderful run in the competition so far having stormed through the group stages and now must find a way past The Mariners in the Northern Area semi-final.
The two sides drew 1-1 when they met in Youth Alliance League action back in November but McGuckin’s youngsters have prospered in cups this season and will hope to make further progress.
“The lads are all really looking forward to the tie,” McGuckin admitted.
“We have had some real joy in the cup competitions so far this year so I know everyone is determined to keep that going.
“We played against a young Grimsby Reserve Team not so long ago and have obviously played them at Youth level too so we know what we’re coming up against.
“In midweek a lot of our Youth Team players were in our Reserves when we got past South Shields on penalties and I think the nature of that result will stand us in good stead.
“It was a different kind of environment for the young lads to play in with Shields bringing so many supporters but they stood up to it and performed well so hopefully we can carry the confidence from that in to the weekend.”
Joe Jackson is sidelined for Saturday’s game with a hamstring problem but Josh Bayne should be in contention to play after shaking off illness.
Kick-off at Welfare Park is 12noon and entry is free so if you can make it along to cheer the lads on then they’d appreciate your support.
