Retro Shirt Stirs Memories For Honour

Pools legend Brian Honour tries on our new retro shirt from the 1990/91 season

Brian Honour took a trip down Memory Lane on Friday afternoon when he pulled on a shirt from the 1990/91 season for the first time since promotion was won.

The Club legend was one of the heroes of that unlikely promotion at the start of the nineties, amongst a squad that remains revered by Pools supporters.

And when he pulled on our brand new retro shirt, Honour was immediately transported back in time almost 30 years to that glorious afternoon at The Vic.

“Putting that shirt on definitely stirred the memories,” he told us.

“The last time I wore that shirt before today was for that Northampton game that got us promotion in 1990/91 which ended with a mass pitch invasion in celebration.

“I remember Alan Murray had warned us that if it got scary when the whistle went that we should just get off the pitch as quickly as possible.

“Well, word had got round the stadium that results had gone our way and we were up, so the fans were ready right round the touchlines preparing to run on.

“Our keeper Kevin Poole looked at the ref, he gave him the nod and then blew the full-time whistle – and I was stood on the right wing right over by the Mill House side at the time!

“I think I got to about the centre circle by the time the fans caught up with me and they then proceeded to just take everything off me.

“My boots were first, then my socks and shinpads, my tubigrip bandages went the journey, the shirt, even my old pit vest that I used to wear underneath was ripped off me!

“I remember standing there in just my pants thinking “Right, just calm down here, let’s not be hasty!”

“Thankfully, I got back to the dressing room where the champagne corks were already popping but I did get some strange looks when I walked in with just my underpants on!”

Honour is sure that the limited edition retro shirt, the first item launched in the Club’s new 1908 Gold range, is going to be popular with supporters.

“It’s just such an iconic shirt, with the chevrons down the sleeves - it has always stayed in people’s heads.

“I am pretty sure they’re going to be a big seller for the Club, it’s a great idea to get them made up – any chance we can do the checkerboard one next?”

The shirt is priced at just £35 and is available now in the Club Shop and online at Pools Retail.
