Matthew Bates said he wouldn’t trade his squad for any other in the National League after they racked up a third straight win with a battling triumph over Chesterfield.
Nicky Featherstone’s first half goal was enough to secure all three points against The Spireites but they had to show real guts after the break to claim their first clean sheet of the campaign.
After producing some silky football and creating several good opportunities in the opening 45 minutes, Bates’ men had to dig deep after the break to hold on for a win which moved them up to eighth in the table.
“I thought we started really well, it was magnificent really,” he told Pools PlayerHD.
“We got the ball down and played some lovely stuff at times and going in only 1-0 up at half-time flattered them because we had other chances.
“Performances this year have been brilliant in possession but we showed another way to win today – with utter determination and a great defensive display not just from the defenders but from everyone.
“Nicky Featherstone might be ignoring my instructions but he picked the ball up in a great area and it’s a lovely finish on his weaker foot – he deserved that for what he gives to the team.
“The fans also deserved it; we’ve had last-minute goals go against us this season but we held on well for the three points.
“The lads are buoyant in there; there’s a real spirit and camaraderie and they need to realise how far they can go because I wouldn’t swap this squad for any other in this league.”
