Pools picked up their first three points of the campaign with a 2-1 win over Maidenhead United at The Super 6 Stadium.

Luke James got the first goal of his return spell to make it 1-0 just after half-time before Nicky Featherstone doubled the lead with an impressive effort.

Maidenhead United got a goal back on 80 minutes to make for a nervy finish but Matthew Bates's side were worthy winners and held on for the win.

After a congested first ten minutes, the game here at The Super 6 Stadium opened up and there were chances at both ends.

Maidenhead United were first to test their luck after winning a freekick to the left of the area; Nana Owusu went for goal with his effort but was denied by Scott Loach who parried at the near post.

Pools’ first chance of the game came on the quarter hour mark after a good break upfield saw Mark Kitching finish with a shot but he was denied the opener by Carl Pentney who blocked the ball.

Michael Woods was the next to get stuck in, forcing his way forward with a determined run, skipping past the last-ditch challenges inside the box to square the ball for Niko Muir. The striker though was just too close to the keeper and Pentney grabbed the ball.

Liam Noble lifted a ball over the top for Luke James to have his first shot at goal on 20 minutes but James’s header was held by the visiting stopper as Pools enjoyed a spell of pressure.

Ryan Donaldson was a threat down the right for Pools this afternoon, with the partnership of James and Muir causing issues in the final third for Maidenhead.

Bates’s side had work to do at the other end as the visitors provided a threat of their own going forward and Maidenhead should have taken the lead on the half-hour mark. A corner into the box from the left found both Ryan Bird and Remy Clerima waiting at the far post but, with the goal in both their sights, the ball was hit wide under pressure from Donaldson.

Luke James saw a shot from the edge of the box held by the keeper and watched another chance go wide as he looked to fire his side into the lead before the break.

Myles Anderson had the last chance of the half as he headed just over the bar from a Liam Noble corner.

It took Pools just over a minute of the second half to get the opener; good work from Niko Muir saw the ball played out to Donaldson. He in turn sent the ball into the box where James eventually got the breakthrough his hard work deserved with a header across Pentney and into the far corner of the net.

The second goal arrived on 60 minutes and what a goal it was; Michael Woods fed the ball through into the box for Nicky Featherstone who beat the defender before turning and executing the perfect chip over the Maidenhead man, which curled in at the far post to make it 2-0.

Pools went close to making it 3-0 on 75 minutes when Noble delivered a freekick from the left that just missed the head of Peter Kioso as he arrived in the box and Anderson couldn’t direct it over the line as he waited behind him at the far post.

It was Maidenhead who were next to hit the back of the net as Alan Massey got up to head home from a corner kick and make things a little tighter for Pools in the final ten minutes.

The visitors then upped their pressure on Pools and when James Comley fired in a low drive from the edge of the area, there was relief as it went wide of the post.

But Pools dug in to pick up the three points for the first time this season.
