Pools Youth Team were beaten 6-3 by Doncaster Rovers in their latest Youth Alliance League outing at Blackhall’s Welfare Park on Thursday afternoon.
Ian McGuckin’s young side gave as good as they got during an entertaining first half but tiredness became a factor after the break and the visitors took advantage.
Indeed it was Pools who were out of the blocks quickest and Ryan Robinson broke well with the ball to score his second goal in as many games with a fine finish from twenty yards to make it 1-0.
However, the lead lasted only five minutes as Rovers responded with a free-kick which was brilliantly bent in to the top left-hand corner of the net to level things up.
The visitors cleared a Lewis Orrell corner off the line before going 2-1 in front when Pools were caught on the counter-attack down the right and the ball was cut back for the striker to finish.
Pools came back in to just before the break though when Joe Jackson got on the end of Jacob Owen’s cross to head home the equaliser from close range.
Rovers restored their lead twenty minutes in to the second half when a ball over the top put Pools on the back foot and it was square for the front man to finish from close range.
There was further distance between the sides on 71 minutes when Doncaster added a fourth goal but Pools had hope again when Owen scored from the penalty spot after the referee spotted a push in the area.
However, the visitors made sure of the three points when the pounced on a parried shot to make it 5-3 before a shot was curled in to the top corner from the edge of the box right near the end to round-off the scoring.
“The lads looked tired today, particularly in the second half,” admitted McGuckin.
“It was too much for them really, we didn’t keep the ball well enough and we were punished from every opportunity by Doncaster in the end.”
