Matthew Bates praised his side’s efforts after seeing them pick up a well-earned point at Sutton United this afternoon.

The Pools’ boss spoke to Pools PlayerHD after the match to give his views on the performance,

“Going on the second half performance I think it was a deserved point, we matched them second half,” Bates said.

“In the first half, we got off to a slow start. We had worked on their style of play and watched a video before we left the hotel and it was route one to say the least.

“We changed formation slightly at half time and tried to get up against them higher up the pitch, and we more than matched them then.

“There was never a point in the second half – except the last second of course – when I thought we were struggling. I was pleased with that, it was a grafting performance.

“I couldn’t believe how many fans were there today, especially after the last two home results but I’m sure they’ll go back happy, I know they’d have preferred the three but it’s a great point in the end.

“We’re due a win at home now, we need to do what we’re doing away from home; the fight and the spirit.”
