Pools Youth Team shared the points with Oldham Athletic after a six-goal thriller in the Youth Alliance League on Wednesday afternoon.
Ian McGuckin’s youngsters had to come from two goals behind to claim their deserved point and they could even have pinched a victory during a frantic finish in Durham.
The game got off to the worst possible start when Pools failed to deal with a ball in to the box and it was headed in at the far post to give Oldham the lead with just two minutes gone.
Pools rallied and got back on level terms midway through the first half when Harrison Webster delivered a cross in to the area which was bundled home from close range by Josh Bayne.
However, Pools shot themselves in the foot at the start of the second half when they once again struggled with a delivery in to the middle where it found an unmarked played to convert for 2-1.
The task got even more difficult for Pools five minutes later when a long throw-in caused problems in the box and, after a little bit of pinball, it was fired home by the visitors to open up a 3-1 lead.
Pools refused to lie down though and they grabbed a lifeline on 70 minutes when Josh Scott raced clean through the Oldham defence and finished well to make it 3-2.
With Athletic on the back foot, Connor Rennison drove in to the box where he was fouled before picking himself to score from the resultant penalty to bring Pools level.
Scott had a shot blocked and substitute Joe Jackson had a couple of half chances as Pools pressed for a winner in the closing stages but in the end it finished all-square.
“It’s great to get a point from the game given the position we got ourselves in to,” admitted McGuckin.
“The boys showed good character to deal with a much more physical and strong opponent but they kept plugging away and in the end we got our reward.
“In the end we could even have got a winner but we have to be happy with the point and the lads performed well overall.”
