Pools Youth Team were beaten 5-0 at Wigan Athletic in the Northern Area Final of the Youth Alliance League Cup on Saturday afternoon.
Ian McGuckin’s youngsters have enjoyed good success in cup competitions so far this season but their luck ran out in the Final against a powerful Latics outfit.
Pools were on the back foot from the early stages in the game and the hosts went in front when danger man Mwiya Malumo fired home from close range with just fifteen minutes on the clock.
Some determined defending kept Wigan at bay until just before the break when Charlie Jolley extended the home side’s lead after some brilliant play to jink through the Pools defence.
Pools proved more stubborn in the early stages of the second period but Wigan did get their third goal on 72 minutes as this time Jamie Cotter found space to drive a shot beyond Ryan Catterick.
An Athletic trialist then whipped a shot in off the post to make it 4-0 before Tom Hilton got up highest to head home a corner and add further gloss to Wigan’s win.
“Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say you were beaten by the better side,” McGuckin admitted afterwards.
“Wigan were excellent on the day and deserved their win so we just have to put that down to experience and wish them all the very best in the Final.”
The Latics will now go on to play Luton Town in the National Final of the Youth Alliance League Cup after The Hatters saw off Oxford United in the Southern Area Final on Saturday.
