When Pools fans Dom and Emma Skelly went to find the Leyton Orient match on TV during their honeymoon in Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca, they expected to be the only people in the bar cheering on Craig Harrison’s men.
And they certainly didn’t expect to find themselves watching the game alongside the Club’s owner John Blackledge who was also there on holiday with his family!
But that’s exactly what happened as they watched Pools run out 2-1 winners at Brisbane Road in a small bar called The Pines.
“We went looking the day before to try and find a bar showing the Pools match and we found the only one in the area that would be screening it,” explained Dom.
“When we were watching the match, there were four people who were also cheering Pools on from the table behind us.
“They didn’t sound like they were from Hartlepool so when the match had finished, I went over and asked them what the link to Pools was.
“Then one of the lads turned round and pointed at John and said he’d bought the Club three months ago! That definitely wasn’t what I expected them to say!
“It was surreal enough bumping into more Pools fans in Mallorca, never mind one of them being the owner of the Club.”
After a chat about the game, Mr Blackledge’s son-in-law got the couple’s details with the promise of tickets to a game on their return from honeymoon.
“They took my number and then, last week, I got a text from John saying that someone from the Club would be in touch with me that day,” Mr Skelly went on.
“I then got a call asking us down to the Eastleigh match as guests of the Club, which was a great way for us to extend our honeymoon by one last day.”
The Club invited the new Mr and Mrs Skelly along to The Vic as guests of Chairwoman Pam Duxbury in the Boardroom for Saturday’s match with Eastleigh – two weeks to the day that they were married.
Everyone at the Club would like to congratulate the pair on their wedding and wish them the best of luck for their future together.
