Hartlepool United Ladies were knocked out of the League Cup on Sunday as their new campaign got off to a disappointing start against South Shields.

Andy Stuart’s team actually took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Caitlin Bates got free on the left to deliver a cross in to the penalty area for Nicky Duckling to score.

However, things unravelled after the break for a Pools side weakened by the absence of several key players, as the visitors took control of the game at Grayfields.

The leveller came from the spot after a dubious penalty award five minutes after the restart and that gave Shields confidence as they continued to look a threat moving forward.

That danger came to fruition in the closing minutes when Pools conceded two goals and hand the tie to their visitors.

“We’re obviously disappointed to lose but fair play to South Shields on their performance,” Stuart commented.

“We have the FA Cup and the league itself to look forward to now so nobody is too downhearted, we just have to get prepared and keep moving forward.”
