A very young Pools Reserve Team will kick-off their Central League season with a trip to face Grimsby Town at Blundell Park on Tuesday afternoon (2pm kick-off).
Matthew Bates and Ian McGuckin will take charge of a squad made up predominantly of Youth Team players, though there are some trialists set to be involved against The Mariners.
Pools will run the rule over Brandon McCarthy, Jacek Wuwer and Oluwatomisin Adeloye in this afternoon’s fixture.
“We haven’t really got a Reserves group as such this season so the team might be different from game to game,” Bates explained.
“It’s certainly a very young side which is going to Grimsby because we’ve had so many First Team games in the opening month of the season so we don’t want to overdo it with the players.
“It will be good for the Youth Team players to get a taste of Reserve Team football, I guess for a lot of them the game will be the biggest they’ve played in because it will be the highest level.
“That’s sometimes good to throw young players in to a situation like that and see how they react, see what they do well and not so well, and then learn from it – it will stand them in good stead as they move forward with their careers.”
Bates is also looking to progress his own career and is excited at the prospect of building his experience in the Reserves dugout during 2017/18.
“It’s a new one for me and I am looking forward to it.
“I had a taste of it last year but I am still learning and looking to progress my coaching career so to be involved with the Reserves will be good experience for me.
“I’ve got Gucky alongside me tomorrow which is great because he has a greater knowledge of the young players to he will be a big part of the Reserves set-up this season too.”
We’ll have a full report and reaction from the game here on the Official Website following the final whistle at Blundell Park.
