Pools Reserves were left waiting for their first league win of the season as they fell to a 4-0 loss at Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday afternoon.

Matthew Bates mainly youthful line-up did include Lewis Hawkins, Jack Munns and Conor Newton as well as trialist Joash Nembhard who featured in defence.

Rovers were in control for the majority of the first half but passed up their first big opportunity to open the scoring when a debatable penalty was awarded and then missed.

However, there was little doubt about the foul which resulted in a second penalty for the home side on the stroke of half time – and this time they found the net to make it 1-0.

Pools began the second half in bright fashion and enjoyed more possession in the opening fifteen minute without really managing to find the cutting edge they needed.

And they were made to pay for that just after the hour mark when Rovers doubled their lead and effectively killed the game as a contest.

The hosts were dominant in the closing period of the encounter and scored another two goals to add gloss to their first league triumph of the campaign.

“Effort and commitment wise you can’t fault the lads but we just lacked that little bit of quality on the ball,” admitted Bates afterwards.

“Certainly towards the end Rovers got well on top and they penned us in to our own half really and although we defended quite well, we struggled to get out and keep the ball.

“They had a bit a more experience in their side and it showed really, I can’t be too critical of the players but it’s certainly a learning curve for some of the younger lads.”
