Someone Can Make History - Bates

5 May 2017

Matthew Bates has insisted that the players must free their minds of any distractions and focus entirely on making sure they get the three points from Saturday’s game with Doncaster Rovers.

Pools know they must defeat promoted Rovers and hope that Newport County slip up against Notts County if they are to survive in League Two this term.

However, caretaker boss Bates has explained that the players won’t be concerning themselves with events elsewhere and instead channelling all their efforts in to getting the victory they need.

“We don’t need to know the other result – we just need to win the game,” Bates told Pools PlayerHD.

“We won’t have to consider what Newport are doing because nothing changes so there will be doubts for the players on the pitch.

“The players know the task they have in store but we approach the game full of confidence.

“Doncaster are a good team – they wouldn’t be where they are in the table if they weren’t but anyone is beatable.

“We have watched them and we feel like we have a good idea about what they will do so we’ll show them respect but not too much.

“I think the lads played without fear at Cheltenham and we’ve tried to have the same sort of week leading up to this game so they need to be fearless again.

“The fans will help that because the twelfth man saying is true, particularly when you’ve got a big crowd behind you like we will have on Saturday.

“I know the fans will back the players but then it’s down to the players to keep them going by putting in a performance and showing their desire and fight.”

Bates is backing one of the squad to emerge as the hero from this Saturday’s League Two decider and has encouraged the players to embrace their chance to win folklore status at the Club.

“Someone in our dressing room could make history,” he admitted.

“It could be any one of them and that’s what the message will be this weekend – it doesn’t matter what’s gone before for the rest of the season because it’s all forgotten about if you go and score the winner on Saturday.”
