Youth Team Pick Up Point At Grimsby

13 March 2017

Pools Youth Team brought home a creditable point from Grimsby Town on Saturday as they returned to action for the first time in three weeks.

Bad weather has frustrated John Hewitson’s youngsters so they were eager to make up for lost time with a positive performance against The Mariners at the weekend.

Pools began the game on the front foot and created several decent scoring opportunities in the opening period, Liam Travers, Connor Simpson and Niall Short all coming close to finding the net.

Jordan Fielding and Simpson then both sent headers just too high as Pools caused problems for their hosts from a couple of dangerous set-pieces.

The best chance arrived ten minutes before the break when Simpson saw his powerful shot parried but Short’s follow-up effort cannoned back off the keeper to safety.

Having passed up the opportunity to go in front, Pools were hit with a sucker punch just prior to half time when Town’s forward beat the offside trap to make it 1-0.

After a slight reshuffle during the interval, Pools came out and dominated much of the second half and quickly began to push the home side on to the back foot once more.

Ethan Wood, Lewis Orrell and Simpson all came close to equalising but more often than not, the final ball in to the box was not good enough to create clear scoring opportunities.

However, the persistence paid off on 85 minutes when Joe Jackson was in the right place at the right time to fire home from close range after Simpson’s header back across goal had been parried by the keeper.

Pools could even have snatched all three points with time running out as Jon Weirs wriggled his way through the Grimsby defence only to see his shot well saved.

“The pleasing thing today was that the lads showed real character and good patience,” explained Hewitson afterwards.

“It was a game we really should have won given the amount of good chances we created but the lads showed a good mentality to ensure that we didn’t lose.”
