Dave Jones praised his players for digging in during a difficult first half before blowing Crewe Alexandra away with a 4-0 win at The Northern Gas and Power Stadium on Tuesday.
The Pools boss was less than impressed with his team’s performance in the opening period though his mood was brightened when Lewis Alessandra opened the scoring just before the break.
Jones’ men then took a stranglehold on proceeding in the second half when Padraig Amond came off the bench to make it 2-0 before Alessandra grabbed a second and Nathan Thomas rounded things off at the death.
“In the first half I think I would rather have watched paint dry – but the good thing is that they dug in,” Jones told Pools PlayerHD.
“If we had come in at half time at 0-0 then I would have been happy but we stole a goal and then in the second half we looked like a different team.
“We’ve been talking about performances but more importantly we needed a result and that first half was probably our worst performance yet we came in 1-0 so full credit to them.
“Joe (Fryer) made a couple of great saves to keep us in it because they’re fighting for their lives as much as we are but once the second one went in everyone started to enjoy it.
“When the fourth goal went in I had the warm glow so I am really pleased for the players because they worked hard and I’m pleased for the fans because they stuck with them.
“Confidence is here and now we have to make sure we keep doing the right things.”
