Dave Jones is looking forward to doing battle with promotion-chasing Portsmouth this weekend and has urged his players to start turning their performances in to regular results.
Pools earned plaudits for their display at Blackpool last weekend but left with no reward as the hosts nicked a late winner to leave Jones’ men contemplating a familiar story.
However, the boss remains convinced that good progress is being made and he knows that will be tested when Paul Cook’s Pompey roll in to town this weekend.
The South Coast outfit are well-placed to secure automatic promotion and will be backed by a sell-out away end but Jones says the Pools players and supporters must focus on their own ambitions.
“They’re a big club and they’re trying to get out of this division,” Jones told Pools PlayerHD.
“They have been at the big heights and they want to try and get back there – they’ve certainly got the support to back that up.
“It’s a good club; I was down there and lived in Southampton for five years so I know it’s a fantastic club with a fantastic tradition so we have to beat that and what’s we will try to do.
“We have our own agenda though, so we won’t worry about them; we have something we’re trying to build here and we’re on our own pathway so we’ll be more concerned about ourselves than about them.
“They’ll bring good support, they always do, but our fans were absolutely fantastic at Blackpool last week – the noise they made from start to finish was brilliant so hopefully we get a few more coming on Saturday.
“We have been getting some good performances but not always the result; sometimes you’d take an absolutely awful performance if you get the win.
“We’re moving in the right direction but you just want it to come sooner rather than later.”
