Pools star Carl Magnay has revealed that he is confident of a return to First Team action before the end of the season as he continues his remarkable recovery from a cruciate ligament rupture.
The full-back has been on the sidelines since suffering the serious injury in our game against Mansfield Town in September and he underwent reconstructive surgery at the beginning of October.
Initially ruled out for the remainder of 2016/17, Magnay’s response to his rehabilitation programme has stunned medical experts and he’s now been given the green light to further step up his work load.
The 27-year-old is back outdoors at the training ground under the watchful eye of Head Physio Ian Gallagher and his staff – and he is now focused on playing some part in the latter stages of the current campaign.
“We’re making good progress,” Magnay revealed in a special feature on Pools PlayerHD.
“I have done this injury before about six or seven years ago and the difference between my recovery this time and from the first time is night and day.
“There is obviously a huge stigma attached to an ACL injury and 25 years or so ago it would have ended a player’s career so it’s testament to the way that the surgery is now dealt with that it’s no longer the case.
“I think the most important people are the ones you work with day in and day out once you’ve left the hospital and I have to say the people I have worked with here at Hartlepool have been first class – I couldn’t have wished for anyone better to be in charge of my recovery.
“We’re three months in to what is generally seen as a nine-month rehabilitation but I am already doing stuff that I shouldn’t until the four or five month stage.
“I think the aim is to be back before the end of the season; I don’t want to put a date on it but when I got the injury and had surgery at the start of October it would generally mean that I wouldn’t see a football for the rest of the campaign.
“I’m going well and we’re confident that I will be back in a Hartlepool shirt for a competitive game before the season is out and how many games that will be remains to be seen – but every one will be a bonus.
“Even to be able to say that there’s that chance I will play again this season is great news and it is a credit to everyone who has worked so hard every day to get me back to fitness.
“I have to be cautious but I want to get back out there as soon as possible; if we really pushed I could possibly get back sooner but you have to think about the repercussions of that and Buster (Ian Gallagher) has the reins on me.
“We have this phrase for Buster where we say ‘In Bust We Trust’ – and that’s exactly what I am doing.”
