Dave Jones has told his players they must continue to build on the progress they have made when they are visitors to play-off chasing Colchester United on Saturday.
Pools came close to shocking second-placed Plymouth Argyle at The Northern Gas and Power Stadium last weekend and it was a performance which drew credit from fans and staff alike.
Now Pools boss Jones wants more of the same when they return to action at Colchester and insists that he is seeing signs of the hard work being done on the training ground coming out in games.
“When I first came in I said that it wouldn’t happen overnight,” he told Pools PlayerHD.
“We’re trying to find a way of playing which we feel is better for them and if they can continue the way they performed last Saturday then we’re on the right path.
“We’re not carrying the biggest squad and it’s a young group we have at the moment but this is good experience for them and will stand them in good stead for the rest of their careers.”
The U’s continued a rapid rise up the league table in midweek when a 1-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers saw them move in to the play-off positions.
It was only in mid-November when The U’s were second bottom and facing the prospect of a relegation fight – and Jones reckons their example can help inspire Pools to climb the table themselves.
“It just shows you how the league is,” he admitted.
“Colchester are very competitive and very strong, and if you can get on a run of three or four games then you can get to positions in the table that you didn’t think you could reach.
“We’re still aiming to climb as high as we can and we’re trying to set a lot of things in place; safety is the priority, of course it is, so at the moment we’re concentrating on the squad and getting them up the standards we feel they’re capable of.”
