Pools And Plymouth Share Points

18 February 2017

Pools and Plymouth Argyle shared the points in an entertaining match at The Northern Gas and Power Stadium.

Pools took a while to get going this afternoon, with Plymouth on top for the opening quarter hour.

Scott Harrison put in a great block inside the box, throwing his body in the way as the visitors piled forward in numbers.

Joe Fryer made a couple of good early saves to deny Argyle the first goal; the on-loan keeper first blocked a Ryan Taylor freekick at the near post before pushing out a Jake Jervis effort at the opposite side.

Graham Carey went close with his chance on 14 minutes as he picked up a diagonal ball to cut inside and send a powerful drive at goal – the ball fortunately hit the side netting and not the back of the net.

Pools had their first chance of the game on 15 minutes and it fell to Nathan Thomas; the winger exchanged passes with Lewis Alessandra to unleash an effort from the edge of the area but his shot went just over the bar.

Joe Fryer was back in action shortly after, throwing himself bravely at the feet of Jervis to prevent the shot on goal.

Jones’ side were edging their way into the game and mid-way through the first half, the hosts grabbed the lead; Thomas sent the ball across to Sean Kavanagh on the opposite wing. The on-loan full back crossed back into the box where Thomas fired in on goal. His shot was blocked but Rhys Oates reacted quickest and smashed the ball home to make it 1-0.

Shortly after the goal, Nathan Thomas was chopped down by Oscar Threlkeld – an incident that added a real bite to the game.

The atmosphere inside the ground was bouncing, with the home fans responding to the passion being shown on it and it was much closer and more entertaining end to the first half.

The best chance of a second goal came when Thomas dinked a ball into the box for Rhys Oates who rose well to meet it but just lost out to Luke McCormick who intercepted.

And the second half started out just as lively, with both teams looking a threat on the attack.

Pools, encouraged all the way by a really vociferous crowd this afternoon, looked full of movement going forward and put in some decent tackles in the middle to win possession.

Sean Kavanagh won the ball back inside deep inside the Pools half to set Lewis Alessandra running the other way; he fed it on for Padraig Amond who returned the favour inside the box but Alessandra’s final headed effort went over the bar.

Scott Harrison, who was strong at the back along with Brad Walker for much of today’s game, put in another good block to deny Jervis running into the box.

Pools new-look back line had plenty of work to do in the second half and they put in a real shift against a strong team.

With 76 minutes on the clock, it took a real individual piece of magic to draw the visitors level in the game; Matty Kennedy, who had been a handful for most of the game, picked up possession to the left side of the box and curled a beautiful strike into the opposite top corner of the net, leaving Fryer with no chance.

Kenton Richardson blocked an effort on the line to deny the visitors a second goal in the dying minutes of the game as Argyle upped their pressure in search of a late winner.

The five minutes of added time were greeted with roars by the home fans inside the ground as they sensed an opportunity for Pools to still grab the three points from the game.

And there was a late chance for Pools as Michael Woods set up Alessandra running in on goal but his effort was blocked out wide for a corner, with Walker then sending his shot over the bar from the corner.

In the end, the game finished all square, with Pools picking up a valuable point against a solid Plymouth Argyle.
