Hartlepool United Ladies bounced back to form with a 3-1 win over Guisborough in the North East Regional Women’s Football League on Sunday afternoon.
After defeat in the semi-final of the County Cup in their previous outing, Andy Stuart’s girls were keen to get back on track when they hosted seventh-placed Guisborough at Grayfields.
Pools made a solid enough start to the game but the visitors defended with determination and broke to open the scoring against the run of play ten minute before half-time.
It was a setback for Pools but they regrouped quickly and top scorer Jess Dawson helped herself to two goals in just five minutes to send them in 2-1 up at the break.
Pools continued to dominate at the start of the second half and created several good opportunities to extend their lead, only to be frustrated by some more good defending.
However, substitute Jade Pye was proving a real threat since being introduced at half-time and she made it 3-1 on the hour mark with a deadly finish from close range.
Stuart’s girls remained on the front foot and the more likely side to score but a mixture of poor finishing and good goalkeeping meant they had to be content with a 3-1 win.
“Since the Middlesbrough game we’ve struggled to get a steady squad out due to injuries and work commitments,” Stuart explained.
“It’s been quite a poor second half to the season and last week’s performance in the County Cup against Chester-le-Street epitomised that.
“With five games left the goal is to every game and finish as runners-up – hopefully that will be the case,” he added.
