Dave Jones praised his players for their battling qualities after they picked up a creditable point at home to high-flying Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.
Pools led midway through the first half when Rhys Oates fired home a rebound after Nathan Thomas’ shot had been parried by visiting keeper Luke McCormick.
It looked as though that was going to the decisive moment as the game moved in to the final quarter of an hour but then Argyle’s loan star Matty Kennedy curled home a wonderful leveller to ensure the points were shared.
“The fans will cheer and clap if they see endeavour and I think they also saw some good football today so all the work we’re doing might be paying off,” Jones told Pools PlayerHD afterwards.
“We knew that they would come out at us but Joe (Fryer) made a couple of good saves because they did pile the pressure on and the one thing we didn’t want was to concede early on again.
“Then we great in to it and had a couple of little chances – I actually thought Nathan’s shot had gone in – and we got stronger and stronger from that point.
“We needed a second goal really to kill them off but once they got the equaliser from a good goal it was always going to be a case of us having to dig in, though we still had a couple of good breakaways.
“I thought we looked fitter and stronger than we have been and we got it down and tried to play – so if the young lads keep on doing that and learn from it then this Club will move forward.”
