Ian McGuckin says his Youth Team won’t make it easy for Liverpool when they host the Anfield outfit in the FA Youth Cup at Victoria Park on Wednesday night (7pm kick-off).
McGuckin has overseen a fantastic run in the competition so far which has seen his young charges see off Morpeth Town, FC Halifax Town, Chester and Carlisle United en route to Round Three.
And he insists they’re not ready to stop there and will be going all out to produce one of the shocks of the competition when Steven Gerrard’s Reds roll in to town on Wednesday evening.
“We know how tough the game will be – but we won’t be making it easy for Liverpool either because we want to progress,” McGUckin told us.
“We’ve done a lot of homework on them, we have a gameplan which we have worked on with the players and they will go in to it as prepared as they can be.
“I am really pleased it’s at Victoria Park because hopefully we’ll get a big crowd turning up to support us and that can help give us an extra edge in the game.
“We’ll need that backing against a side like Liverpool but if we play like we can then they will know they’ve been in a game so the lads are all excited and looking forward to it.”
McGuckin has the luxury of selecting from a fully-fit squad for Wednesday night’s glamour tie now that Niall Short has recovered from injury.
“I have sensed a real focus from the lads in the last week or so and they need to take that on the pitch with them,” McGuckin added.
“They’re working hard to prepare and give themselves every opportunity to get the result.”
Admission prices are just £5 for adults and £3 for concessions so if you can make it along then make sure you’re at The Vic to support the Club’s youngsters.
