Academy Manager John Hewitson brings us an update from Holland where the Youth Team are enjoying a pre-season tour
On Tuesday the team had a fixture against Excelcior FC. The team are based in Rotterdam and we know they would be a tough test.
I would say that it was Excelcior started the better of the two teams and, after a slack pass which was intercepted, they took the lead.
Disappointingly, just nine minutes in, Excelsior then went further ahead when we didn't defend well enough from a corner and we left ourselves a mountain to climb in the game.
However, as the game went on we grew in confidence and started to get back into the encounter. At half time we shuffled the team around slightly and it immediately began to pay dividends.
Joe Jackson was lively and caused the opposition problems with his direct running and physicality. Jon Weirs got us back into the game when he drove through the defence and slotted home to make 2-1.
Then, straight afterwards, we won a wide free-kick which was delivered well into the box by Lewis Orrell and converted back post by Connor Simpson to make it 2-2.
We were right on top now and had the momentum. Therefore it was no real surprise that with ten minutes to play a corner was again delivered to the back post and Simpson rose well and headed in to put us in the lead.
In the dying moments of the game Joe Jackson got himself on the scoresheet when he tapped in from a corner to make the win safe at 4-2.
The lads showed great character and resilience to come from behind and win the game against a well-organised and technically-gifted opposition.
We’re really pleased with the way our stay in Holland has progressed so far and hopefully this type of experience will serve the players well both on and off the field moving forward.
