Academy Manager John Hewitson gives us an update from the Youth Team’s Dutch training base as they settled in to their tour with a friendly against English opposition.
After spending our first day mostly traveling to our base in Mill, Holland we had a late evening training session and settled into the hotel.
On Day Two we had an early training session on the fantastic grass training pitches at the facility and then we then played a friendly against Scunthorpe United FC, who are also staying here.
The game was played in hot conditions and after two early chances in the game, which we failed to convert, a poor clearance was picked up by Scunthorpe and after some quick play they scored first to make it 1-0.
However, after some good play we forced a corner which was delivered into the back post for Connor Simpson to head home and equalise.
Our second goal came from a good delivery into the box which was then flicked on into the path of Joe Jackson who was fouled and a penalty was awarded. Joe calmly slotted home to put us in to the lead.
We went further ahead in the second half when a Jack Cooper drove forward with the ball and put a great cross into the box behind the back four in which was converted by Connor Simpson.
Our fourth goal came from a strong run into the box by Lewis Orrell who was taken and another penalty was awarded. This time Simpson stepped up and finished well to claim his hat-trick in the game.
The match ended 4-1 and was a great workout for the lads in hot conditions. Special mention to Connor Simpson on his hat-trick and some great wing play from Ryan Robinson who impressed in the game.
It is a great start and were hoping to take the momentum into our next game against Den Haag FC.
I’ll bring you another update soon.
