Pools Youth Team continued their fine unbeaten run with a thoroughly deserved 2-0 win over Scunthorpe United at Blackhall on Saturday.
Nick Green’s youngsters are now undefeated in six games after this latest success was built on a third clean sheet in the last four as the Youth Team end their campaign strongly.
Pools began at a high tempo and carved out numerous early chances; Liam Travers struck the bar and Connor Simpson saw a shot well saved as the hosts made the running.
With Lewis Orrell and Jon Weirs controlling the midfield and Niall Short causing problems for the Scunthorpe defence, Pools probed for the opening goal.
The breakthrough finally arrived when Travers cut inside and fed a delightful pass in to Simpson whose first touch set up a shot and he rifled it home from twelve yards.
Travers and Simpson both spurned opportunities to double Pools’ lead early in the second half as the game continued in a similar pattern to the opening period.
Short switched play for Ryan Robinson and Simpson to link-up and Robinson’s cross was converted at the far post by Travers to make it 2-0 on the hour.
Travers could – and probably should – have added extra gloss to the victory when he got on the end of an inviting Weirs cross but he couldn’t provide the finishing touch and the chance passed him by.
“We showed some intelligent game management to see out the game for a comfortable three points,” explained Youth Team boss Green.
“As a group the lads have been first class in recent weeks; Cameron Holliday and Ryan Robinson deserve a special mention for their excellent work down the flanks against Scunthorpe.
“We’re striving for an improvement in every performance and three wins and three draws from the last six games, along with three clean sheets, is a testament to how well the lads are developing.”
