Give It Everything You've Got - Bates

25 April 2017

Matthew Bates has called on the players to show pride, passion and belief for the last two games of the season after he was handed temporary charge of the First Team.

The 30-year-old will oversee affairs for the run-in, assisted by Billy Paynter, Stuart Parnaby and Ian Gallagher following the departure of Dave Jones and his staff on Monday.

Bates says the responsibility that he, the staff and the players have in their hands is something that will inspire them as Pools fight to get out of the League Two relegation zone.

“I am the one that is leading it but I have three staff with me and all the players as well – and everyone just wants the best for this Football Club,” he told Pools PlayerHD.

“This is my third season here now so I know what it means to everyone who works here behind the scenes; the heartbeat of the Club is suffering and we need to help so that’s been the message.

“The shackles are off now. We’re in the bottom two and have got to try and get the two wins so that’s what we’ll be going all out to do.

“We will have a plan in place very quickly and I’m excited about it. Am I ready for it? Who knows, but one thing I will say is that I will give this everything I have got.”

Bates says he can feel a change in mood among the squad since the weekend and he wants to harness that as he prepares the side for Saturday’s crunch game at Cheltenham Town.

“I have been in that dressing room all season with this group of players so I think I know what we want now because what is gone is gone,” he insisted.

“We have a mini-season with three teams involved so we’ve got to try and win that mini-league over the next two games.

“I have had a chat with the lads and I sense a new vigour about the place so we’ll kick-on during the week now.

“We need a reaction and, from what I have seen, we will get one because the lads have been bouncing around the place so everyone at the Club – the players, staff and fans – have got to get around that and who knows what can happen?

“It’s down to the players to show some pride and some passion because that is what will win these two games now.”
