Dave Jones has encouraged his players to show spirit and determination as well as a greater cutting edge when they host Carlisle United on Good Friday.
The Pools boss has admitted that the 1-1 draw at Morecambe on Saturday felt like an opportunity missed to collect three points and he’s keen for the team to make up for that against The Cumbrians.
Carlisle arrive at The Northern Gas and Power Stadium fighting to stay in the play-off positions after a run of just one win in their last nine but Jones knows it won’t be easy despite the visitors’ struggle for form.
“We know what we’ve got to do but they’re trying to get back on track too so hopefully things can go in our favour,” he told Pools PlayerHD.
“I know it will be a difficult game because they all are but we just have to try and be at our best to get the points that we want.
“We will have to be strong and brave but also put away the chances we are creating – if we could do that then we would be sailing, really.
“Keith Curle is a tough cookie and he gets his teams organised; they were flying earlier in the season and he’ll be trying to correct that now so he’ll know how important the game is, as much as we do.”
Jones says that pressure will be building at all the clubs fighting for points at the base of League Two with only five games left in the campaign.
Newport County’s win at Exeter City over the weekend saw them move within three points of Pools but the boss says it’s important the players focus on their own jobs and don’t get caught up in that.
“It’s in our hands so there’s no need to worry about anyone else, we’ll just worry about ourselves.
“It’s no good looking at other results, it doesn’t have any bearing on what we’re trying to do – we know we have to try and get points and that’s what we’ll focus on.”
