Pools Youth Team got back to winning ways on Saturday when they thumped Preston North End in the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday.
John Hewitson’s men got off to the best possible start when they grabbed the lead inside twenty seconds; Liam Travers played a neat one-two with Jordan Fielding before finding the net.
Pools gained confidence on the back of that strike and began knocking the ball around well; Josh Hawkes could have made it 2-0 when he chased on to Ethan Wood’s pass but the keeper denied him with a good save.
The visitors could have levelled things up just before the break but the North End front man blazed an effort over the bar to let Pools off the hook.
Just after the hour mark Pools doubled their lead when Fielding’s free-kick found Hawkes, who broke the offside trap to run through on goal to smash home the second goal.
Jon Weirs had a great chance to make it 3-0 when he went clean through but dragged his shot across goal and wide, while Travers had a header cleared off the line.
Pools made sure of the win right at the death when Hawkes set substitute Joseph Jackson through on goal and when his shot saved, Weirs was there to convert from the rebound.
“It was a very good performance from the lads,” admitted Hewitson afterwards.
“The lads showed what they are capable of and the difference was that we took more of our chances today and that helped us grow in confidence as the game went on.
“There were some great individual performances – particularly from Liam Travers who was a constant threat – but I was pleased with the whole team and now they have to maintain that standard.”
