Craig Hignett blasted his players for an inept performance and admitted that he and the team deserve all the criticism that will come their way after a 6-1 defeat at Stevenage.
The Pools boss was livid as he watched his side turn-in a shocking second half performance during which the home side ran away with the contest and could even have scored more goals.
Hignett has vowed to get back to work on the training ground to make sure they hit back in a positive manner from the setback at The Lamex Stadium.
“It was painstaking to watch,” Hignett told Pools PlayerHD.
“That team was unrecognisable from what we’ve seen before; we’ve had words in the dressing room but what can you say after that? It was embarrassing.
“The start was perfect for us but then the goals we’ve conceded are terrible – and not just three or four or them, all six of them. We can’t defend like that - it was schoolboy stuff.
“We had a lot of injuries and players missing but that’s no excuse – the lads we have put in have the chance to stake their claim. It was the whole team, not just the defence though; lads were looking after themselves and not willing to help others.
“It didn’t take great play to open us up – it was straight balls and that can’t happen. That was the worst 45 minutes I have ever seen any team put in.
“This has to be a wake-up call. If you go anywhere thinking you’re better than you are then you’ll get done in this league.
“The fans deserve miles better than that so every bit of stick that I get and the players get we deserve. For them to travel all this way and see an inept performance like that isn’t good enough so I apologise to them.
“We’re in all week now and we will work hard to make sure that it never happens again.”
