Pools Youth Team fell to defeat on Friday afternoon as Scunthorpe United took all the points from their Youth Alliance League encounter.
It could have been different had Pools taken a great chance inside twenty seconds of kick-off but Short dragged an effort wide after being played in by Josh Hawkes.
Short had another good opportunity to open the scoring when Liam Travers laid the ball in to his path but the youngster struck his half-volley straight at the keeper.
Pools had to wait until the 43rd minute for their breakthrough; Kenton Richardson broke away down the right, drove in to the box and delivered it across for Hawkes to convert from close range.
Scunthorpe came out fighting after the break and got back on level terms when a long throw-in was flicked on in to the path of George Hornshaw who fired the ball in to the back of the net.
A poor clearance from Ryan Catterick then allowed the hosts to edge in front, as George Barmby drove forward with the ball and coolly struck it past the Pools keeper.
Connor Simpson was introduced from the bench for Pools and almost made an immediate impact but he saw his volley fly just wide of the post, while Travers also spurned a good chance to level the game.
However, with seven minutes remaining Scunthorpe sewed up the win with a third goal when Barmby found enough space in the box to square for Kyle Porter to score.
“It was a really disappointing second half performance,” admitted John Hewitson afterwards.
“We showed so much promise in the first half and deserved to be in the lead but we should have been more clinical with our chances and stronger at the back.
“If we can perform like we did in that first half more consistently then we can do well in this league but we have to cut out the sloppiness we showed after the break.”
