Ladies Hit Prudhoe For Nine In FA Cup

20 September 2016

Hartlepool United Ladies cruised in to the third qualifying round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup by smashing nine unanswered goals past Prudhoe Ladies on Sunday.

Andy Stuart’s girls were in scintillating form as they began their FA Cup campaign and from the first whistle they looked determined to ensure safe passage to the next stage of the competition.

Some strong Prudhoe defending meant that Pools had to wait until midway through the first half to net the first goal when a great move involving three players gave Casey Crossman the chance to dribble in to the area and drive the ball home for 1-0.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 as the in-form Jess Dawson received possession on the right flank, drove at the home defence and then unleashed a ferocious shot from fifteen yards which flew in to the roof of the net.

Just before half-time Dawson was on target again when she produced a smart finish after dashing on to a free-kick from the left which had been flicked on by Jade Pye.

It didn’t take long for the fourth goal to arrive after the break when a ball over the top was then played across the six-yard area for Sarah Bartlett to stroke home from close-range.

Dawson completed her hat-trick in the 65th minute when she easily outpaced the Prudhoe defence before drilling home emphatically from fifteen yards.

Justine Robinson then took centre-stage after being moved in to a more attacking role; she tore the home defence apart with a stunning four goals in just 13 minutes as Pools ran riot in the final twenty minutes to see the game end 9-0 in their favour.

“I talked last week about the need to finish teams off and we certainly did that today,” enthused Stuart afterwards.

“I think our fitness levels were key, especially in the last fifteen minutes when the girls really turned the screw and produced some slick football.

“This is a competition we want to do well in again this year so to start off with such a resounding victory will give us confidence for the games ahead.”

The draw for the next round has handed Pools a home tie against West Yorkshire outfit Ossett Albion.
