Pools Reserves suffered their first defeat of the season on Friday as Newcastle United ran out 5-1 winners in the Central League Cup at Little Benton.
After an even first half, The Magpies stepped it up after the break and took advantage of some mistakes from a young Pools’ outfit to claim the group stage victory.
Newcastle began the game well and forged in front midway through the first period when Sean Longstaff found the space to convert from close range.
However, some excellent football saw Pools move the ball from left to right for Dylan Elliott and his incisive pass found Rhys Oates who produced a smart turn and clinical shot to bring the scores level at 1-1.
That’s how it stayed until half-time but Pools were to be punished for some bad errors in the second half with Longstaff restoring the home side’s lead not long after the restart and he completed his hat-trick moments later.
Magpies substitute Elias Sorensen added further gloss to the scoreline late on by bagging a brace to make it 5-1 and leave Sam Collins to ponder the Reserves’ first reverse of the campaign.
“Newcastle were a good side but every goal we gave away was down to a mistake from us,” he explained.
“I know it wasn’t the result we wanted but it was good for us in some ways because it was a completely different kind of game to what the lads have been used to.
“Newcastle really put us under pressure and closed us down on the ball – and, I don’t know it was because of who we were playing, but some of the lads hid a bit, which they haven’t really done at all prior to this game.
“If these players want to go on and challenge for First Team positions then they need to handle these types of situation so I learnt a lot about them from this game.
“I would say the pleasing thing was some of the performances from the younger players, particularly Ryan Catterick and Kenton Richardson who both put in very good displays.”
