Hartlepool United Ladies Progress In FA Cup

11 October 2016

Hartlepool United Ladies will host Accrington in the fourth qualifying round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup after cruising past Ossett Albion on Sunday.

Andy Stuart’s girls knew they would have to be at their best against their West Yorkshire visitors but they set the tone early on by racing in to a two-goal lead inside ten minutes.

First Jenni Duffy-Smith showed her creative spark by lifting the ball to the far post where Justine Robinson headed home before Jade Pye made it 2-0 by driving in to the penalty area and drilling a low shot beyond the keeper.

Ossett responded well though and regained their composure sufficiently to pull a goal back with twenty minutes on the clock and they kept Pools at bay for the remainder of the first half.

However, Casey Crossman’s arrival on the hour mark paid immediate dividends as the substitute’s direct running began to trouble Albion’s defence, resulting in two goals in the next fifteen minutes.

Robinson helped herself to a second of the afternoon when she dribbled in to the box to beat the keeper, and then Casey outpaced the visiting backline to make it 4-1 on 75 minutes.

Four minutes lates Becca Smith found space in the box to control and volley home Pools’ fifth goal of the day before Duffy-Smith added the sixth when she got in on a rebound with nine minutes left on the clock.

There was still time for Crossman to round-off the scoring with a seventh goal for Pools; Amy Barr charged forward from deep inside her own half to play the ball through and Crossman used her pace to good effect before producing an exquisite chip from twenty yards to make it 7-1.
“I was very happy with the result and the performance,” admitted Stuart afterwards.

“Ossett stuck to their gameplan well – they were hard to break down and looked a threat on the counter-attack at times so our girls needed to stick to their guns.

“We lacked ideas on breaking them down at times and it was only down to some excellent finishing in the latter stages that gave us a rather flattering winning margin.

“The big games keep coming for us because we have a top-of-the-table clash against Durham next week and we can also look forward to the fourth round of qualifying against Accrington next month too.”

The Ladies will host Accrington in the next round of the competition at Greyfields Enclosure on Sunday 13th November.
