Craig Hignett described his side’s performance as excellent as goals from Lewis Alessandra and Matthew Bates secured victory over Cheltenham Town on Saturday.
The Pools boss was delighted with the attitude and application his side showed as they picked up three points to climb up to 15th place in the League Two table.
Pools could even have helped themselves to more goals as they inflicted The Robins’ first defeat in ten games to move just three points from the play-off positions.
“I thought we started the game well and for the first 25 minutes or so it was some of the best football we’ve played,” Hignett told Pools PlayerHD.
“We had a little spell after that where we sat back and they got back in to the game but then we worked them out again and played some more good stuff.
“It was a perfect time to score right at the end of the first half and it was important once we got that goal to stay in front because we’ve talked a lot recently about being in the lead and not seeing it out.
“Fair play to Barts (Adam Bartlett), he made an unbelievable save just after half time, it was so agile to keep it out of the top corner and it set the tone because once that happened I knew they were going to have to do something special to score.
“I thought we defended set-pieces well, put our bodies on the line, worked really hard and had a good shape about us going forward – if I’m nit-picking then I thought we could have scored more goals.
“We knew they would give us a physical test but, overall, the lads were excellent and now we need to keep on building on this."
