Hartlepool United Ladies set-up a mouth-watering SSE FA Cup tie away at Middlesbrough after thumping Accrington Ladies 7-1 in the final qualifying round on Sunday.
Andy Stuart’s girls will make the short trip to face Middlesbrough Ladies at Thornaby at the beginning of next month in what is set to be the biggest game in their short history.
Despite Accrington being from a division higher than Pools, the result very rarely looked in doubt at Grayfields on Sunday, in a game watched by Chairman Gary Coxall.
Jess Dawson picked up the pieces when the visitors failed to deal with a corner of nine minutes and rammed in the opening goal though Accrington equalised midway through the first half following a lapse in concentration at the back from Pools.
However, that damage was undone shortly afterwards when Jo Hurrell restored the lead from the penalty spot after an Accrington defender had handled inside the box.
With the visitors still reeling at the penalty award, Pools pressed on and grabbed a third goal two minutes later when Dawson scampered through to score her second of the afternoon.
Dawson was proving unplayable for the Accrington defence and she completed her hat-trick before half time when she smashed home another unstoppable effort from just inside the area to make it 4-1.
It didn’t get any easier for Accrington after the break and it was Dawson again who was proving the threat, adding her fourth goal of the day after outpacing the defenders once more to convert.
Caitlin Bates scored a quick-fire double just after the hour-mark, first racing clear to drill past the goalkeeper before then producing a smart turn and finish from twenty yards to make it 7-1.
“It was another good performance and a game we controlled,” explained Stuart afterwards.
“We took our chances when they came along and restricted our opponents to very little in front of goal so I was really pleased with the girls.
“The game at Middlesbrough will be on Sunday 4th December so that’s something to look forward to but we’ve got some other important fixtures to look at before then.”
