Ladies Progress In Durham County Cup

21 November 2016

Pools Ladies Team were victorious once more on Sunday as they scraped past a determined Boldon CA Villa outfit in the County Cup at Grayfields.

Boldon are currently top of Durham Women’s League 1 having all nine of their games this season so far – and they made Andy Stuart’s girls work hard for their cup progress at the weekend.

The game was just 12 minute in when Pools stole in front with a great move involving five players; the passing sequence saw the ball end at the feet of Amy Cowan and she swept it home from five yards out.

However, the visitors were quickly back on level terms as they raided down the left wing and sent a cross in to the box where Pools struggled to deal with it and Boldon snatched an equaliser.

It got worse for Pools before the break as Boldon, buoyed by their leveller, went in front when they pressed forward again to slot the ball past keeper Jess Geoghan.

Stuart made changes just before the our hour-mark in an attempt to wrestle back control of the game but Pools had to remain patient in their search for an equalising goal.

And it didn’t arrive until seven minutes from time when Lottie Portas burst forward before drilling in an unstoppable strike from twenty-five yards to make it 2-2.

After that, Pools’ extra fitness began to show as they pressed for a late winner but Boldon were defending with determination in a bid to keep the scores level.

Justine Robinson rattled the bar with a ferocious effort on 87 minutes as Pools flooded forward and they got their rewards when Jess Dawson drove to the byline before crossing for Laura Wilson to tap-in a dramatic winning goal.

In a tense finale, Boldon could even have got a goal back but Pools held firm and ensured it would be their name in the hat for the next round.

“We had a few injuries and suspensions which affected our shape and we were unusually poor in defence,” admitted boss Stuart afterwards.

“All credit to the girls for grinding out what was a well-deserved win in the end though; we’ve got some big games coming up now so hopefully we can be sharper and show greater concentration.”

Hartlepool United Ladies next game is against South Shields at The Monkton Stadium on Sunday 27th November (1.30pm kick-off).
