Ladies Keep Pressure On At Top Of Table

1 November 2016

Hartlepool United Ladies hit double figures on their way to a resounding victory over Prudhoe Ladies in the North East Regional Women’s League on Sunday.

The emphatic result means that they remain second in the table, just three points behind leaders Durham Cestria in the race for promotion.

Andy Stuart’s girls got off to a flying start against Prudhoe at Grayfields, opening the scoring inside ten minutes when Jess Dawson got away down the left and smashed an unstoppable effort past the keeper.

Amy Cowan then followed suit by making a similar run on the right flank to score the second goal before Dawson hit the net again after trading passes with Faye Garside.

It was 4-0 to Pools ten minutes before half-time when a Jenni Duffy-Smith corner was headed in to the net for an own goal by a visiting defender.

A series of substitutions for Pools at the break did little to dent their momentum and Caitlin Bates scored the fifth goal three minutes after the restart when her cross deflected in to the net.

It wasn’t long before Bates grabbed her second of the afternoon when she raced through to slot a low shot past the keeper, before Duffy-Smith made it 7-0 when she scored at the second attempt after her first shot had been parried.

Bates then completed her hat-trick in the 72nd minutes when she outpaced the visitors’ defence to score from inside the box – and then she did exactly the same again just four minutes later to score her fourth and make it 9-0 to Pools.

Sarah Bartlett added the tenth goal twelve minutes from time when she was on hand to fire home from close range after Hannah Lambert’s effort had come back off the post.

The unplayable Bates then twisted and turned brilliantly past two Prudhoe defenders to score her fifth goal of the game before Sarah Rowbotham scored the final goal after rounding the keeper to score.

“We rotated the team a little but the players who came in really delivered the goods,” said Stuart afterwards.

“It was a good solid performance and they had to work hard because, fair play to Prudhoe, they did keep going even when things went against them.

“We don’t have a game next weekend so that gives us two clear weeks to prepare for our FA Cup game against Accrington on Sunday 13th November.”
