Pools Youth Team recorded an excellent weekend victory as they saw off third-placed Rotherham United 3-1 at Welfare Park in Blackhall.
John Hewitson’s youngsters set the tone early on by making a bright start to the game and could even have gone in front inside eight minutes as they put some pressure on from set-pieces.
However, Pools were made to wait until midway through the first half for the opening goal when Jon Weirs drove past his full-back and sent a cross in to the box towards Connor Simpson where a visiting defender sliced the ball past his own keeper for 1-0.
It was a lead which Pools took in to the break and extended just after the restart; the second half was only four minutes old when Ethan Wood sent Weirs away down the left and another good delivery this time found Simpson and he neatly converted past the keeper.
The Millers rallied and produced a strong response, getting themselves back in the game by scoring from a corner to make it 2-1 ten minutes later.
However, Pools were in no mood to let their lead slip and Simpson bagged his second goal of the game on 65 minutes when Liam Travers darted to the byline and crossed for the front man who saw his initial effort come back off the post before safely tucking home the rebound.
“It was another strong team performance,” said a delighted Hewitson after the game.
“It was extremely pleasing to see the lads put in to practice the things we have been working hard on in training since the last game and to score from three crosses was fantastic.
“Confidence is high now on the back of this win and last week’s victory in the Youth Alliance Cup so we can’t wait for the next game to come around now.”
